Alright, let’s talk about this Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer” bezel project I got into. I’ve always been a bit of a watch nerd, and the Root Beer GMT has been on my radar for a while. That two-tone bezel, brown and black, it just looks so darn cool.
So, I decided to try and recreate that look on a watch I already had. It wasn’t a real Rolex, just a decent homage piece that I picked up a while back. Figured it was a good candidate for a little DIY fun. First thing I did was to find a bezel insert that looked close to the original one. It wasn’t easy, I’ll tell you that! Browsed through a bunch of online stores and forums. Finally found one that seemed like a good match. It was a ceramic insert, just like the real deal, with that nice glossy finish.
Once the bezel arrived, I got to work. The hardest part was getting the old bezel insert off. That thing was glued on tight! I used a small, flathead screwdriver and a whole lot of patience. I kept working it in the gap, and then wiggled and wiggled. Slowly but surely, I managed to pry it loose without scratching the watch case. That was a close one!
Then came the moment of truth – putting the new bezel insert on. I applied a thin layer of watch adhesive around the inside of the bezel. Then, carefully, I lined up the new insert and pressed it into place. I made sure it was centered perfectly before the glue started to set. Then, wiped off any excess glue with a soft cloth.
The Result
- Fit: The bezel insert fit perfectly. No gaps, no wobbling.
- Look: The colors were spot on. That brown and black combo really popped.
- Feel: The ceramic felt smooth and high-quality, just like the original.
I let it dry for a good 24 hours, just to be safe. And let me tell you, the end result was awesome! It looked surprisingly close to the real Rolex Root Beer. Of course, it’s not the same as having the genuine article, but for a fun little project, I was pretty stoked with how it turned out. It added a whole new personality to my watch, and I found myself wearing it much more often. I even got some compliments on it! I’m glad to have such an experience. My watch looks better than before, and I gained much fun from it.
