Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001 for a while now. I mean, it’s a classic, right? But the price tag is, well, let’s just say it’s a bit hefty. So, I thought, why not try to remake it? Here’s how it went down.
First, I spent a good chunk of time just staring at pictures of the 5227J-001 online. I checked out a bunch of different websites and forums, like Chrono24 and some other watch enthusiast places. I wanted to get a really good feel for the watch, you know? The way it looks, the details, all that stuff. I noticed they were selling for about $28K to around $41K. This was going to be a serious project, I had to get all the details right.
Then, I started looking for parts. This was a real pain, to be honest. I needed to find a decent movement that was similar to the original Caliber, which is apparently 3.3 mm thick. I learned that it’s a symbol of perfection or something, I guess that’s why they call it the Calatrava cross. I dug around online, asked some friends who are into watches, and even visited a couple of local watch repair shops. No luck. This part was impossible to find.
Next, I focused on the case. The original is 18k yellow gold, 39mm, and has this really nice ivory dial. I found some similar-looking cases online, but they were either too expensive or just didn’t look right. I almost gave up on the gold and thought about just going with a gold-plated one, but that would just be a waste of money. I’d know it wasn’t real gold and I am sure my friends would find out.
The dial was another challenge. I tried to find a replica dial, but most of them looked super cheap. So, I decided to try and make my own. Would I do it again? Probably not. But it was a fun experiment, and I’m happy with how it turned out. Now I have a watch that looks kind of like a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001, and I didn’t have to sell a kidney to get it.
