Okay, so I got this wild hair to try and remake that PRADA Small Galleria Saffiano Special Edition Bag. You know the one, right? It’s that fancy-schmancy bag all the celebs are carrying around. It’s made of that “Saffiano” leather. It is super expensive.

I saw a picture online, and I just thought to myself, “Self, you could totally make that.” So, I did some digging. Turns out, Saffiano is not just some fancy word for leather. It’s got this special texture to it, like a cross-hatch pattern.

• I started by sketching out the bag. I looked at a ton of pictures from every angle. I mean, I practically memorized every stitch.
• Then, I made a pattern. I used some cardboard first, just to get the shape right. Once I had it down, I transferred that pattern onto some craft paper. Seemed sturdy enough.
• Next up was finding the leather. I went to a bunch of fabric stores and leather shops. Finally found some black leather that looked pretty close to Saffiano. It wasn’t exactly the same, but I figured close enough is good enough.
• Then came the sewing. Let me tell you, sewing leather is tough work. I broke a couple of needles. My fingers were sore. I started with the main body of the bag, then I did the sides. The handles were tricky. I had to sew them on real strong. I sewed them over and over to make sure they were secure.
• Then, the inside. I used some nice, soft fabric for the lining. I even added a little pocket, just like the real one.
• Finally I added the hardware, you know, the little metal bits. Found some that looked kind of like the PRADA ones, but way cheaper.

After many days, it was done. I stood back and looked at my creation. It wasn’t perfect. There were some crooked stitches, and the leather wasn’t exactly the right texture. But you know what? It looked a lot like that PRADA bag. And I made it myself! I felt like a real designer.
